Environmental Monitoring and Research Services (Laboratory)

Monitoring of environment resources is an integral part of environment management. Analysis of quality of air, water, soil and noise generate information that can be used for environmental management. Therefore, SchEMS has established a well-equipped and well set environmental monitoring laboratory. There are four main sections in the laboratory: microbiological unit, physicochemical unit, instrumental unit and store. The laboratory service is mainly used for academic purposes and regular environmental monitoring programs of SchEMS. The laboratory is available for students, faculty members, and research associates for their research and academic activities.

Laboratory analysis can be employed for various aspects of environmental monitoring and management, for example, in the field of water supply and sanitation, indoor and ambient air pollution, occupational environment, industrial and municipal wastewater, soil nutrients and metals, pesticide pollution, EIA baseline and monitoring data generation, bio diversity conversation, watershed management, and others.

The laboratory possesses the following main equipment:

» Electronic analytical balance
» Thermometer » Water Deionizer Set
» Conductivity meter » BODI Incubator » Vapor Sampler
»
Microbiological Incubator
» Hot Air Oven » Reflux Apparatus
» Desiccator with silica Gel » Centrifuge » Thermohygrometer
» Kjeldahl digestion Apparatus » Autoclave » Sediment sampler
» Magnetic Stirrers » pH meter » DO meter
» Jar Test Set » Computers » Nepthometer
» High Volume Air sampler » Refrigerator » Microscope
» Electricity Generator » Water bath
» Microbiological Filtration Unit » Aminometer

For the field based research works, researchers can carry water sampler kit and portable instruments out in the field and analyze the quality of air, noise, soil, and water. The instant result helps the researchers to know the exact situation of the area they are working in. The collected samples can be brought to the laboratory and the assigned parameters analyzed.

Students employ gravimetric, titrimetric, potentiometric, and spectrophotometric methods. For water, wastewater, and soil, parameters like pH, electrical conductivity, color, turbidity, hardness, chloride, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, dissolved solids, and oil and grease are analyzed.

Likewise, nutrients like Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Organic Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Calcium, Magnesium, Fluoride, Sulphate, Residual Chlorine, Iron, Manganese, Lead, Cadmium, Chromium, Arsenic can be analyzed. Similarly, among microbiological parameters, organisms like total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus and Escherichia coli can be analyzed. The biological parameters that can be analyzed are benthic invertebrates, phytoplanktons, zooplanktons. Parameters like total suspended particulate, PM 10, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide can be analyzed in air samples.

Quality results and output are always desired from a laboratory whether that be in academic research or client oriented service. SchEMS laboratory has been designed to produce quality results. Quality control activities are regularly practiced in the laboratory
