Celebration World Environment Day 2007 - Bicycle Parade

The World Environment Day opts for 2007 was "Melting Ice – a Hot Topic". In support of International Polar Year, the WED theme selected for 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the ensuing consequences around the world. Climate change refers to the variation in the Earth's global climate or in regional climates over time. It describes changes in the variability or average state of the atmosphere over time scales ranging from decades to millions of years. As Kathmandu being considered the most polluted city of the Asia, vehicle emission is known to be the major source of air pollution contributing to the global environmental problems. Present fossil fuels consumption of Nepal
is about (13-15)%, which is expected to increase. In Nepal, the average temperature is increasing at the rate of approximately 0.06 degrees Celsius annually and 0.12 degree Celsius in Himalayan region. Unfortunately, Nepal’s environmental evils has been plugged by many sever factors like deforestation, pollution, over population and degradation of natural resources. Today climate change is a major environmental concern, though it receives little attention. Nepal consist many snowcaps mountains, which are the major water resources to downstream. Due to impact of climate change snow feeding rivers are running dry most of period. Nepal has over 3,252 glaciers and 2,315 glacier lakes out of which 44 are at potentially bursting stage (UNEP). Glaciers are very sensitive indicator of climate change. The major problem associated with Glacier Lake is Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). Besides this climate has impact on biodiversity, Agriculture, Human Health etc.

In this regard, to combat against the air pollution in Kathmandu Valley Green Vehicle most encourage. At this instant, the students of Environmental Management of SchEMS organized “a bicycle parade”…an Effort to Combat Climate Change, on the occasion of World Environment Day 2007, 5 June in order to draw people consciousness towards the global climate change issue.
